FREE CATHEDRAL PASSES TO ALL RESIDENTS IN THE CB6 AND CB7 AREA

19 March 2014

Come and discover your Cathedral - One of the 'wonders of the mediaeval world'

On Saturday 5 April, Ely Cathedral will be throwing open its doors and inviting local residents to a 'Come and discover your Cathedral' open afternoon' on the 5 April between 1pm - 5pm.

'Come and discover your Cathedral' not only promotes English Tourism Week but will also publicise the fact that anyone living within the CB6 and CB7 post code is entitled to a free residents pass allowing unlimited entry to Ely Cathedral at any time the building is open to the public. The afternoon will be packed with things to do including free ground floors tours, half price tower tours, free brass rubbing and free entry to the Stained Glass Museum which is located up in the Cathedral's triforium . Children will have the opportunity to dress up as a monk and a participate in a special children's trial looking for clues around the Cathedral to win one of the many fair trade Easter Eggs we have to give away. Complimentary afternoon tea & cake will be served in the magnificent 14th Century Lady Chapel.

Canon Alan Hargrave is delighted with the new policy to issue free residents passes. "The huge cost of maintaining the building, worship and mission of Ely Cathedral - around £6000 a day - means that, sadly, we have to make an admissions charge to help pay the bills. We do, however, want to make the cathedral freely accessible to local people. We already have in place a free pass scheme for Ely residents and church goers in the Diocese of Ely. However, we are now able to extend this to all of those living in CB6 and CB7 area. This means that people from the nearby towns and villages who regularly come into Ely to shop will be able also to enjoy the Cathedral free of charge at any time the building is open."

Anyone wishing to apply for a residents pass will need to bring a document showing proof of residency in the form of a utility bill, driving license etc. The pass is valid for two years before it will need to be renewed.
