GIRL CHORISTERS

Singing at Ely Cathedral is an experience which sets girls up for life. Between the ages of 11 and 16, our choristers receive an unrivalled musical education, performing daily as professionals in the Cathedral as well as in venues all over the world. They learn skills of self-discipline and confidence, and gain an appreciation of hard work and high standards which lasts a lifetime: choristers go on to successful careers in all fields and develop a passion for music. It's a big commitment for them and their families, but they make life-long friendships and have a lot of fun!

Our girls sang for the first time in September 2006. Since 2010 the choir has been under the direction of Sarah MacDonald who is also Director of Music at Selwyn College, Cambridge.

Ely's girl choristers are all educated at King's Ely, joining in year 7 and staying through to year 11. The senior members board together in Canonry House, whilst the junior members board in Priory House. Former choristers (both boys and girls) in Years 12 or 13 who wish to continue as Sixth Form Choral Scholars (singing any voice part on a reduced choral timetable) can apply to do so whilst they are completing Year 11.

The girl choristers play in integral role in the cathedral's scheme of worship, singing every Monday and Wednesday. They also sing several weekends throughout each term and join the boy choristers for larger festivals, such as Christmas and Easter.

Girl choristers receive bursaries of one-third off boarding fees. Additional means tested bursaries may be available. We strive to ensure that no girl is prevented from taking up a choristership solely for financial reasons and it is sometimes possible, with means testing, for us to approach full funding.
