Lay Clerks and Expanded Choir

The Cathedral Choir has a team of six professional singers, known as Lay Clerks, who sing at six services each week and form the backbone of the choir. Away from the Cathedral they have a wide variety of professional activities, and while many are full-time professional musicians, past and present post-holders have also included teachers, an optician, and a university librarian. All have a high level of musical experience and vocal ability, and many have moved on from Ely to pursue successful careers as professional soloists.

Vacancies for Lay clerkships arise from time to time and are advertised on this website and in the Church Times.

Most services are sung by the Lay Clerks only, but the choir is supplemented on Sundays and for major events such as concerts and broadcasts by a large pool of altos (women and men), tenors and basses. Experienced singers are always welcome to audition to join the ranks of Ely Cathedral Choir on this basis, and these extra singers also act as deputies from time to time.
