College of Canons
The College of Canons
Canons join in our worship and act as ambassadors for the Cathedral. The College of Canons has the responsibility of formally electing the Bishop of Ely, after the Bishop has been nominated for election by The King.
The College is composed of up to 48 individuals. They each serve within the Diocese of Ely or have a very close connection with the Diocese.
They include the Dean, the Residentiary Canons of the Cathedral, the Bishop of Huntingdon, the Archdeacon of Cambridge and the Archdeacon of Huntingdon & Wisbech. In addition, up to 25 Honorary Canons (in holy orders) and up to 14 Lay Canons (not in holy orders) may be appointed by the Bishop.
Additional Canons
As well as members of the College of Canons, the Bishop appoints up to four Etheldreda Ecumenical Canons. These are appointed from the membership of other Christian Churches and is an expression of our participation in the life of the Christian Church as a whole. Etheldreda Canons also join the worshipping life of the Cathedral and are invited to attend meetings of the College of Canons.
The Bishop may also confer upon a former Canon the title of Canon Emeritus.

We are delighted to be supported by those who have served in these roles and continue to enrich the life of the Cathedral community.
