The Friends of Ely Cathedral

The Friends of Ely Cathedral is a worldwide group of people who choose to support, and keep in touch with, our amazing 'Ship of the Fens'.

There are currently about 2,000 Friends. As a registered charity the organisation raises much needed funds by subscriptions, donations, legacies and events. These are used to help maintain and support our great Cathedral and enable it to continue inspiring both visitors and worshippers. New members are always very welcome.

Since 2010 gifts from The Friends to the Cathedral have totalled nearly 3 million pounds. Friend-funded projects include the Way of Life sculpture (2000) the re-ordered Lady Chapel reredos and altar (2010), restoration of the antique altar frontal, live-streaming equipment and restoration of monuments as well as regular commitments of chorister sponsorship and the Cathedral Christmas Tree. In 2025 our biggest funding project was completed – the new Cathedral Lighting – thanks to generous legacies from Friends.
