OUR CATHEDRAL, ONE OF EUROPE'S MOST AWE-INSPIRING AND BEAUTIFUL BUILDINGS, CAN CONTINUE TO BE A PLACE OF WORSHIP, OUTREACH, WELCOME AND CARE FOR ALL ONLY THROUGH THE GENEROSITY OF A COMMUNITY OF VOLUNTEERS AND DONORS
Across thirteen centuries, people from all walks of life who have loved the Cathedral have contributed to its daily life and community. Today that community extends to the 250,000 visitors, including 10,000 schoolchildren, that we welcome every year.
It now costs £1.4 million a year to meet the costs of caring for our historic fabric, maintaining our worship and music tradition, and carrying out our contemporary mission of education, outreach, and care. Cathedrals receive no government funding. Our income goes to meet everyday running expenses and a limited programme of maintenance, but we cannot carry out major restoration work, or much desired new projects within our mission for the future, without additional funds. Quite simply, our donors are vital to us: without them we could not sustain the Cathedral as a place for future generations to enjoy.
Will you help us? Here are some ways - find out more.
All gifts of whatever size are warmly welcomed and equally valued. It is easy to feel that a small gift cannot make much impact, but many small gifts added together can amount to a significant sum! You can give to something specific - such as conserving the historic fabric, supporting our Choir and music, or helping with our work with schools and the community. Or make a general gift which the Cathedral can put to areas of greatest need.
Remembering Ely Cathedral in your Will
Leaving a gift to the Cathedral in your Will is one of the simplest and easiest ways to help fund our future and continue our story for the next 1000 years.

Some of our supporters like to play a more active role as part of a community of like-minded people. The Order of St Etheldreda, named after the founder of the original seventh century abbey on this site, is our premier group of people passionate about sustaining the Cathedral's historic fabric, music and outreach work for the future. Members enjoy on-going fellowship with each other and the Cathedral, and a range of benefits including invitations to exclusive events, priority booking to popular Cathedral events, behind-the-scenes access and much more. New members are always warmly welcomed.
In addition to the Order, The Friends of Ely Cathedral (Registered Charity No. 1157705) who are celebrating their 80th anniversary this year, offer for a modest contribution a range of social events and communications and help fund projects which enhance the Cathedral in many different and visible ways.
Behind this magnificent building which we so richly enjoy, there is an army of volunteers, without whom this Cathedral Church would be unable to function. Volunteering is fun and rewarding! We are always looking for people to join the team: why not contribute your skills or learn new ones, and make friends at the same time?
