SUPPORTING OUR MUSIC

How you can help

Cathedral Choristers

Cathedral Choristers

Worship is at the very heart of cathedral life. These great churches were built to reflect the glory of God with the desire that the acts of worship offered within them should lift our hearts and minds towards heaven. Music has always been the heartbeat of that worship.

Ely Cathedral stands high among those places where music does indeed lift the soul towards heaven in surroundings that are sublime.

Ely Cathedral Choir has been part of the English choral tradition since the mid-sixteenth century, and in terms of its monastic heritage, can be traced back considerably further, to the time of King Canute. Ely's traditional male voice choir is made up of 22 boy choristers and 6 Lay Clerks (gentleman singers). Services are sung daily, and the Choir is in constant demand for many extra concerts and recitals. We want to preserve this extraordinary tradition for future generations to enjoy.

More recently we have welcomed the addition of the Ely Cathedral Girls' Choir, the Ely Imps for children aged 7 to 13, and the Ely Cathedral Octagon Singers, a popular voluntary choir for singers aged 16 years upwards. These all celebrate their 10th anniversary this year with a special concert.

Of course, maintaining this wonderful music tradition costs money - currently £350,000 a year. We are enormously grateful to all those who through their gifts help to ensure the continuing success of the Choir and music at Ely Cathedral. Will you join them? Here are some of the ways you can help:

Named Choristerships

All our boy Choristers are resident at our Song School. They work tremendously hard to achieve the high standards and reputation enjoyed by the Choir. A number of our donors help - either individually or as a group - by contributing the annual cost of a Choristership every year, currently £10,740 for 5 years. All Chorister Benefactors are invited to an annual Service of Thanksgiving when they are able to meet the Choir and each other. If you think you can help in this way, find out more here.

The Lantern Choristership

This is an endowment fund specially for those who cannot cover the full annual cost of a Choristership by themselves, but would still like to contribute to Choristership funds. Any size of gift that you are able to make either as a one off donation or regularly will be greatly welcomed. All donors will be invited to the annual Service of Thanksgiving. Find out more here.

The Cathedral Organ

Tuning and maintaining the Cathedral's magnificent Harrison & Harrison organ and our Steinway piano costs £10,000 per year. Find out more here.

Music for a Day

From £250

It costs Ely Cathedral £1,000 per day to maintain our wonderful music tradition. The sound of treble voices soaring into the vast space of the Cathedral is an unforgettable experience.

A gift of £250 or above will contribute to the cost of a day's music, and provide the opportunity to remember a loved one, the life they lived and the impact they made, in a very personal and positive way. Choose a date that is important to you and celebrate the joy that music has brought. Your loved one's name will be read out on the date you choose.

Join the Order of St Etheldreda

£500 a year brings membership of this special community of Cathedral benefactors. Members enjoy a range of benefits and you can ask for your subscription to be put towards Music.
