ELY CATHEDRAL OCTAGON SINGERS

ELY CATHEDRAL OCTAGON SINGERS (ECOS) was founded in September 2006. Open to all singers aged 16 and over, it is a voluntary choir which complements the work of the Cathedral's full-time choirs, singing on an occasional basis at Evensong, Sunday Eucharist, and many other special services in the Cathedral's calendar. Members have a range of choral backgrounds: it is not necessary to have sung in a church choir before, but those joining must be in sympathy with the ethos and aims of the Cathedral and have proven choral experience. Formal singing qualifications are not required, although a good level of sight-singing and healthy vocal technique are essential.

ECOS currently has over 60 members and new singers are always welcome. Members sign up to undertake as many services and rehearsals as they can commit to, with a minimum requirement of two services per academic term. In general, commitments are at weekends (often a Saturday) but there are some midweek, evening services too. The choir is an enthusiastic and friendly group, committed to enhancing the worship of the Cathedral and tackling repertoire from the Renaissance to the present day, with the first performances of several commissioned works in the last year alone.

Edmund Aldhouse (Assistant Organist of Ely Cathedral) has been Director of ECOS since February 2015 with Andrew Parnell (former Assistant Master of the Music at St Albans Cathedral and Director of Ely Choral Society) as Assistant Director of the Choir. Sarah Clutton is the Secretary of ECOS. ECOS is supported by the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral and the Bishop of Ely.

Would you like to join ECOS? Entry is by an informal, friendly audition with the Director and Assistant Director. Applicants must be able to read music and demonstrate that they can hold their part reliably. At present there is no membership fee but that might change in the future. ECOS members are required to abide by the Cathedral's Safeguarding Policy for Children and Vulnerable Adults, and all those over 18 years of age accepted for membership will be asked to undergo the Cathedral's own Safeguarding Check.

To obtain further details about auditioning and membership, please contact the Secretary of ECOS, Sarah Clutton by email gro/lardehtacyle//nottulc/s for more information.
