Thursday 1 August, 11am

Join John, our Cathedral Guide, on this hour-long military themed tour of Ely Cathedral. John will explain the military history connected with Ely Cathedral dating back through 14 centuries.

  • Hear the story of how Earl Brithnoth lost his head,
  • Who was IVAR the Boneless?
  • What was the Saxon King Radwald’s connection to Ely?
  • How did the kingdom of Northumbria get its name?
  • Why does Ely Cathedral have a collection of military colours (flags) hanging in the North Transept?

Throughout the tour, John will answer these questions and more.

Binoculars, if you have them, might be useful because some of the images are in the stained glass at high level.
