The image featured on the mug is a replica from ' Jacob's dream at bethel - a ladder stretching from heaven to earth' which can be found on the Nave ceiling in Ely Cathedral.
The image illustrates the Old Testament story of how the patriarch Jacob, another of the ancestors of Christ, dreamt that in the very place where he lay a ladder stretched from earth to heaven. Angels were climbing up and down the ladder; it was a place of connection between earth and heaven, between the bodily and the spiritual worlds.
