An elegant Jacquard woven tapestry cushion. The originals are a set of six wall hangings woven in the 15th Century depicting the Unicorn hunt, this panel the sixth, shows the Unicorn seated within an enclosure in a flowery mede. Note the`mille fleur' (thousand flowers) style, i.e. covered with tiny Flowers, among which can be seen are pansies, ragged robins, harebells, foxgloves, periwinkles & other wildflowers. Gold, silk &fine wools were used in weaving the original. Woven in France for the family La Rochefoucauld which adorned the Chateau of Verteuil. The series was sold for $1,100,000 in 1923 to Mr Rockefeller and can be seen in the Metropolitan Museum of New York.
