Statement from the Dean of Ely Cathedral, The Very Revd Mark Bonney

It has been announced today that Canon Victoria Johnson has been appointed as the next Canon Precentor of York Minster.

Vicky moved to Ely in 2015 as the first female Residentiary Canon and in that role has contributed to the pastoral, missional and liturgical life of the Cathedral.

She trained at Westcott House, reading Theology at Cambridge - and spent a semester studying liturgy and homiletics at Yale Divinity School, USA. After serving her curacy in St John the Divine, Brooklands, Vicky took up the post of Priest in Charge of St Michael's, Flixton in Manchester Diocese, where she also taught those training for ministry across the North West.

Prior to ordination Vicky worked as a cancer research scientist and has combined her scientific and priestly roles to great success at the Ely Cathedral Science Festivals. But it is Vicky's passion for music and song that formed her call to ordination and has continued to shape her priestly ministry. She is delighted to be taking up the role of Precentor at York Minster.

The Dean of Ely, the Very Revd Mark Bonney says, 'I am delighted for Vicky that she will be taking up a position so well-suited to her varied skills and abilities, York Minster are very fortunate indeed. We are hugely grateful for all that Vicky has given to our life here in Ely during the past four and half years in so many ways and will miss her ministry enormously. Vicky's ministry has been innovative and exciting as well as pastorally sensitive and we have all benefited from that.'

Vicky said of her appointment 'I am absolutely thrilled to take up the position of Canon Precentor at York Minster. It is a huge privilege to be part of such a fantastic team providing opportunities for everyone to participate in the worship and praise of God in this magnificent cathedral'. She said 'I will be sad to leave the very beautiful cathedral in Ely, as it is a very special place for me, but I am delighted to be moving back north to serve in the Minster and in the Diocese of York.'

Vicky's last services in Ely will be on the Feast of Christ the King, on Sunday 24 November and she will be installed as Canon Precentor of York Minster on Saturday 11 January, 5.15pm at Evensong. All are welcome.
