To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth is a mark of Christian mission and discipleship. The growing environmental crisis and rapid climate change has made everyone think carefully about how we are all called to be stewards of creation. From a small beginning, there has been a growing interest from within the Cathedral Community in the Christian response to the environment. 'Renew': Ely Cathedral Environment Group, began life with the simple act of litter picking on the first Saturday of the month around Ely. There have always been between 8-18 volunteers who have set out in all weathers to keep Ely tidy. The Group will begin working towards becoming an Eco-Church in the coming year so please support them in this endeavour and do come along to meetings if you can.

The formal launch of the Cathedral Environment Group and our work towards the Eco-Church Award, will take place after Evensong on Wednesday 3 April, at 6.15pm in the South Transept with Guest Speaker Jonathan Chaplin.

Jonathan chairs the Eco-church committee at St Paul's Church, Hills Road, Cambridge. He was Director of the Kirby Laing Institute for Christian Ethics, Cambridge from 2006-2017 and is a member of the Cambridge Divinity Faculty. He is co-editor of Living Lightly, Living Faithfully: Religious faiths and the future of sustainability (Faraday/KLICE 2013) and of In Search of Good Energy Policy (Cambridge University Press, 2019). Some small successes:

  • The Cathedral uses 86,000 candles a year. The Aluminium bases of tea-lights will now be recycled
  • We use about 11,000 coffee cups per year. We now use fully recyclable cups across the cathedral.
  • On the first Litter Pick, the team collected 20 bags of rubbish from around Ely.

The Environment Group encourage everyone to take up the Church of England's Plastic Free Challenge during Lent. Further Information about this and the work of Renew: Ely Cathedral Environment Group will be available on the website or email:
