ELY CATHEDRAL ANNOUNCES NEW ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Published: 23 Apr 2019   updated: 24 Apr 2019

The Chapter of Ely Cathedral is pleased to announce the appointment of Glen Dempsey as their new Assistant Director of Music. Glen, who is currently Herbert Howells Organ Scholar of St John's College Cambridge, will take up the role in September. He will be working alongside the Cathedral's newly appointed Director of Music, Edmund Aldhouse, following the retirement of Paul Trepte who had been in that role at Ely for over 29 years.

Glen started his musical career as a chorister at St Mary's, Bury St Edmunds and later in the choirs of St Edmundsbury Cathedral. Organ lessons with Michael Nicholas led to his being awarded a scholarship as a répétiteur to study at the Purcell School of Music and in 2013 he was appointed Organ Scholar at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. Following a brief spell in the Netherlands where he was the Assistant Organist of St Nicholas's Basilica, Amsterdam, Glen became Junior Organ Scholar at St John's College, Cambridge. In this role he accompanies the choir in their busy schedule of daily services, tours, broadcasts and recordings, assists in the training of the choristers and continues his organ studies with Ann Elise Smoot. He succeeded Joseph Wicks as Herbert Howells Organ Scholar in October 2017.

Commenting on his new appointment Glen says 'I am absolutely delighted to be joining the team at Ely Cathedral, with its fine organ and distinguished musical history. It is exciting for me to have the opportunity to contribute to that tradition. Everyone in the Cathedral was extremely warm and welcoming at interview, and thus I am particularly looking forward to becoming part of a group of such wonderful and mutually-supportive colleagues.'
