Ely Catherdral

Over 80 delegates from across the UK gathered in Ely last week (27 - 29 October) to attend the 2017 National Conference of Friends of Cathedrals, Abbeys and Greater Churches. Belfast and Edinburgh Cathedrals were represented for the very first time as were the Roman Catholic Cathedrals so there was a particularly special welcome for the Friends of Arundel and Westminster Cathedrals.

This bi-annual event presents an opportunity for Friends to swap ideas and best practice as well as attend presentations on hot topics. GDPR (the new General Data Protection Regulations) was a popular subject as was a talk by Tallie Proud from Church House on 'Making the most of Social and Digital Media'. In addition to the formal sessions there were opportunities to worship and to explore the many delights of Ely Cathedral. One of the highlights was the Conference Dinner which was held in Ely's magnificent Lady Chapel with the Lord Bishop of Ely as guest speaker.

Organiser Suella Hunting was delighted with the success of the event. 'I have had so much positive feedback from delegates who found the whole weekend thoroughly enjoyable and fulfilling. In addition to the formal sessions & talks there was plenty of socialising and networking together with a 'Friends' Forum' which provided opportunities to exchange information and learn from others'.

The national Friends conference is usually held every two years and in 2019 it is due to be hosted by Peterborough Cathedral.
