Ely Catherdral

1 August 2014

Ely Cathedral will be marking the retirement of its Canon Pastor, David Pritchard, with a special celebration Eucharist on Sunday 28 September. David, who has been at Ely for 10 years, officially retires on 31 December but will be on study leave from 1 October.

David's ministry began in 1982 when he was appointed Assistant Curate at Kidlington in the Diocese of Oxford. In 1984 he became Vicar of Marcham with Garford and was also Rural Dean of Abingdon from 1990-1996. In 1996 David was appointed Rector of the United Benefice of Henley-on-Thames with Remenham, and in 2004 he moved to Ely Cathedral to be Canon Precentor and Pastor - the first Precentor at Ely to be a residentiary canon. Since 2004 David has been the Canon Pastor and has combined this role with the roles of Precentor (2004-2008), Vice Dean (2008-2011) and Acting Dean (2011-2012).

David writes: "I'd like to thank the members of the cathedral community for their love and support over the years. Early on it was clear that we were being called to work together in God's name and in 2006 the Cathedral Pastoral Team was established to enhance the provision of pastoral care for the cathedral community."

Reflecting on his time spent as a Canon at one of England's most prestigious Cathedrals, David adds, "In the 10 years I have been in post we have seen the Cathedral develop both in terms of ministry and profile. We have witness the installation of a new Bishop and a new Dean, we have welcome various members of the royal family including Her Majesty, The Queen and orchestrated a number of high profile services including Sir Henry Cecil's memorial and the wedding of England footballer, Daren Bent. Not forgetting of course the interest we have received from Hollywood and national television. We have certainly experienced some exciting times."

David and his wife Tricia will be leaving the Black Hostelry, one of the medieval buildings in the grounds of Ely Cathedral, to set up home in Little Downham.
