Ely Catherdral

Ely Cathedral has been listed as one of only 24 Cathedrals to be awarded funding in the final round of the First World War Centenary Commemoration Fund. The £500,000 grant will enable the Cathedral to start work on essential repairs to the South Nave Aisle roof and high level masonry which is part of a continuing programme to restore and conserve the Cathedral's historic building.

Heritage Minister Tracey Crouch made the announcement from Southwark Cathedral with representatives from Ely in attendance. "The First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund has done fantastic work to help revive and restore these stunning buildings across our country. Cathedrals are not only beautiful pieces of architecture, they hold centuries of our nation's history and are centrepieces in our communities."

This latest grant is the fourth award made to Ely Cathedral since the Fund was inaugurated in 2014, making Ely one of only 12 cathedrals to receive over £1m in total from the Fund.

Helen Bright, Director of Development at Ely Cathedral, said: "Ely Cathedral is the most recognised and revered heritage building in the area, a landmark visible from many miles away. We are deeply grateful to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, and Church Care for this grant, which means we can move forward with vital repairs to a key area of the Cathedral, ensuring its viability for years to come and enabling the Cathedral to continue to be a place which welcomes, inspires and cares for all our community."

The South Nave Aisle has a very significant role in the day to day life of the Cathedral. It houses the Stained Glass Museum, which is the only museum in the UK dedicated to stained glass, with displays representing eight hundred years of the history of this ancient art form from all over the British Isles. It is much valued as an educational resource for all ages.

The works are expected to commence in the summer of 2017.
