Stories of Ely Cathedral - Etheldreda & the Early Monastery
1 May 2025 - 2 May 2025
Tickets

Come and hear the story of Queen St Etheldreda, the founding of her monastery here in Ely.
Though Ely Cathedral may seem incredibly old it is in fact the third important abbey built on this site. It was founded by someone you have probably never heard of, Queen St Etheldreda. If you had been alive before the Reformation you would most probably have known a lot about her, but would almost certainly have called her St Audrey.
You’ll hear the story of how Etheldreda founded her monastery, what happened to the church she built and the second church which was replaced by the current Cathedral after the Norman Conquest. You’ll make your way round the cathedral to look for signs of St Etheldreda that still remain today. (We recommend you bring binoculars if you have them.)
Dates & Times: Thursday 1 May, 10.30am and Friday 2 May, 12.30pm.
Please meet inside the West Entrance (main door), 10 minutes prior to the tour start time.
Additional Information: Please note that this tour takes place within the Cathedral.
