Etheldreda’s Legacy: The Monastery that started it all.
Come and hear the story of Queen St Etheldreda and the monastery she founded here in Ely.
Even though the Cathedral looks incredibly old, it’s actually the third major abbey to stand on this site. And it all began with someone you may not have heard of – Queen St Etheldreda. If you’d lived before the Reformation, you’d almost certainly have known her well, although you’d probably have called her St Audrey.
On this tour, you’ll hear how Etheldreda established her monastery, what became of the church she built, and how a second church eventually gave way to the Cathedral we see today after the Norman Conquest. As you explore, you’ll look out for the traces of St Etheldreda that are still dotted around the building. (If you’ve got binoculars, they’ll definitely come in handy!)
Date & Time: Monday 11 May 2pm
Please meet at the west end of the Nave, 5 minutes prior to the tour start time.
