A CD Launch to celebrate the legacy of Andrew Downes

Prima Facie Sonatas II is a compelling new recording that celebrates the chamber music of British composer Andrew Downes (1950–2023). Spanning more than three decades—from Meditations for Solo Trumpet (1986) to the final Bassoon Sonata (2022)—the album showcases the breadth, emotional depth, and distinctive voice of a composer rooted in lyrical expression yet enriched by diverse influences.

Featuring an outstanding ensemble of performers, the recording brings to life a vibrant collection of sonatas for flute, piccolo, clarinet, violin, trumpet, and bassoon. Highlights include the expressive Flute Sonata, the dynamic Trumpet Sonata, and the deeply personal Violin Sonata No. 2.

At its heart lies the poignant Bassoon Sonata, completed by Downes’s daughter after his death, offering a moving final tribute. Recorded in leading UK venues, this release is a powerful celebration of creativity, collaboration, and enduring musical legacy.
