‘Little Solemn Mass’ is an intriguing title for a work which is neither small nor solemn!

Petite Messe Solennelle was Rossini’s last major work and was described by him as the ‘last mortal sin of my old age’. A substantial work, it fills a concert programme and requires four operatic soloists and a large chorus. The accompaniment was limited to piano (originally 2) and harmonium, as it was designed for performance in a domestic setting, rather than a large venue.

As the output of a prolific operatic composer, this Mass boasts unashamedly romantic arias for the soloists and bursts of dramatic interjections for the chorus, some of which develop into extended energetic fugues.

With never a dull moment, this music provides tension and release, pathos and drama at the hands of the largest choir in the area, and a team of local vocal soloists and players.

Come and enjoy a sparkling evening before the clocks go back!

Tickets: £20, £15 and £5 for U18s.
