J S Bach’s Magnificat and Haydn’s Nelson Mass

D major is the key for many triumphant choral works. With a professional orchestra, complete with trumpets and drums, a large choir and 5 young soloists, Bach’s fabulous setting of the Magnificat in D is guaranteed to thrill all who hear it.

Haydn added trumpet fanfares to his Missa in angustiis (Mass in the time of peril) after Nelson’s defeat of Napoleon’s French navy at Aboukir. Ever since Admiral Nelson and Lady Hamilton attended a performance of it in Eisenstadt in 1800, it has been known as the Nelson Mass and remains Haydn’s most popular Mass setting.

An orchestral item will be added to the programme.

Ely Choral Society is delighted to have engaged up-and-coming soloists at the early stages of their careers. Some of them will be further supported by the Josephine Baker Trust.
