SUNDAY 3 DECEMBER

Advent Procession with Carols | 6pm
One of the most memorable, moving and popular services of the Cathedral Calendar. This service aims to recapture something of that Advent longing and hope. It begins in darkness with the Advent Prose. The Blessing of Light follows, and, as the service unfolds, the light is carried to other parts of the Cathedral as the procession moves from west to east. The remainder of the service is structured around the Advent Antiphons, known as the Great 'O's. These were sung originally as antiphons to the Magnificat at the Evening Office from 17 to 23 December, and have provided a rich source of devotional imagery in Advent.

Midnight Mass | 11.30pm

Christmas is about making a journey. On one level we celebrate God's faithfulness in coming in search of us. God will not rest until his creation is healed, until his peoples are at peace and their affairs are conducted with justice. On another level we celebrate the fulfilment of our search for God, for he alone can satisfy the restlessness of the human spirit. Both journeys end in Jesus of Nazareth. He is the human face of God, the almighty, ineffable, eternal God expressed in human form. God loves us so much that he came among us to show us how to live in peace. In Jesus we see a human life lived to the full, a living sign of what we have it in us to become.
