The Almonry Restaurant

The Almonry restaurant is a truly unique location nestled amongst the medieval precinct of Ely Cathedral in the centre of the beautiful riverside city of Ely. The main restaurant is located in the 13th century undercroft and has recently been refurbished creating a stunning yet informal space for lunches and bistro dining. The Almonry Tea Room overlooks the gardens and is the perfect setting for morning coffee with a piece of Lesley's homemade cakes - the date and walnut is legendary - or an Almonry Cream Tea with freshly baked scones and locally produced jam. The gardens are extensive and overlook the magnificent east end of the Cathedral with tables, chairs and parasols for alfresco dining or evening drinks and cocktails during the summer months.

The Almonry Undercroft has recently undergone a major refurbishment including extensive redecoration and new lighting. The result is a beautifully lit space with dining tables and chairs positioned under the medieval vaulted ceiling. Various artefacts from the Cathedral stores including a pew bench and prayer stands have been up cycled and included as part of the decor to echo the heritage of the space and the on-going historic relationship with Ely's medieval Cathedral.

The Almonry has an excellent reputation for its local sourced, home cooked food. The lunch trade is extremely popular offering a choice of freshly made sandwich or salad platters, soups, fresh quiches, home baked chicken and asparagus pie plus daily specials such as sautéed chicken breast with leaks and bacon or a pan fried trout fillet with prawn butter. The evening menu is more extensive. Once you have been served an aperitif or cocktail in the gardens or snug, diners can choose from a delicious menu championing English bistro at its best. Favourite starters include warm stilton, mushroom and walnut tartlets or an oven baked Camembert served with sea salt and Rosemary shortbread. Main courses include roasted cod loin with bacon mash and wilted spinach or homemade lamb burger served on toasted ciabatta with sweet potato fries and a feta, tomato and mint salsa. The 24 day matured rib eye steak and vegetarian dishes are always a regular feature. You cannot leave the Almonry without tasting one of their speciality puddings and a glass of dessert wine. Summer pudding with raspberry sorbet and warm treacle tart with Lesley's home made vanilla custard are the current firm favourites.
