THE ORDER OF ST ETHELDREDA

THE ORDER OF ST. ETHELDREDA IS A COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE WHO SHARE THE COMMON GOAL OF SUPPORTING, GROWING AND CONSERVING ELY CATHEDRAL. ORDER MEMBERS PLAY A GENEROUS ROLE IN CONTINUING A STORY WHICH BEGAN OVER 1,300 YEARS AGO IN 673 WHEN ST ETHELDREDA FOUNDED A MONASTERY ON THIS SITE.

About the Order

The Order of St Etheldreda is named after the Saxon princess who founded the original seventh century monastery on the Isle of Ely, the site of the present Cathedral. It was launched in 1992 under the patronage of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, to build on the work of a major restoration appeal in 1986 when the Cathedral was at serious risk of closure. The Order celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2017.

Thanks to this generosity and commitment, Ely Cathedral is now in the best shape it has been for 100 years. But the work of maintaining a historic building is never complete. Maintaining our glorious tradition of music too costs money, and in addition to their annual subscription many Order members continue to support our Choir through funding individual named Choristerships, or contributing to the Lantern Choristership, an endowment fund specially for those who want to give to the Choir but cannot fund a Choristership themselves.

Order Member Benefits

Being an Order Member is not only a great way to support the Cathedral financially: it is also a rewarding way of being more closely involved with its life and work. Order Members receive free admission to the Cathedral and Stained Glass Museum, a programme of exclusive events, special visits to places of heritage and cultural interest, a twice-yearly newsletter, and priority booking to popular Cathedral events and services.

How to join

Order membership starts at £500 a year, which can be paid monthly, quarterly or annually, by cheque, debit or credit card or Standing Order. If you are a UK taxpayer you can increase the value of your contribution at no cost to yourself through Gift Aid. Another option is through a legacy pledge: if you choose to remember Ely Cathedral in your will with a bequest of £5000 or above, you are automatically entitled to Order membership if you wish.

New members are warmly welcomed and formally admitted by the Chairman of the Order at our Annual Gathering in May.
