GABRIELI ROAR ROCKS SOUTHWARK CATHEDRAL NEXT STOP ELY CATHEDRAL ON MONDAY 4 JULY

Published: 19 Feb 2016

On Tuesday 16 February in Southwark Cathedral the winged lion roared once more when the Gabrieli Consort & Players relaunched Roar, the organisation's renowned choral training programme.

Singing to a capacity crowd, more than 100 young singers joined nearly 50 Gabrieli professionals for an evening of music for choir and organ featuring masterworks by Wesley and Elgar alongside plainchant and the music of living composers.

Growing out of an appreciation that cultural opportunities for many young people in the UK's schools are becoming increasingly limited, Gabrieli Roar hopes to reconnect a generation both to the country's heritage and to its acclaimed contemporary choral community, widely regarded to be the world's best.

Artistic Director Paul McCreesh writes, "Our main aim is simply to introduce young people to the joy of choral singing, which we hope will remain with them throughout their lives, and to connect young people with the world of culture in general."

Cambridge Summer Music is proud to act as Festival Partner for Gabrieli Roar in 2016 and we look forward to welcoming their massed (and massive!) forces to Ely Cathedral for the first concert of our summer season on Monday 4 July.
