Summer Organ Recital Series 2009

Battle of the Organs

14 November 2009
7.30pm

On Saturday 14 November two organs go into battle in a thrilling concert at Ely Cathedral.

An electronic organ, belonging to the firm of Makin, the UK's leading manufacturer of pipeless digital electronic church organs, will be delivered to the cathedral on 12 November. The organ will be temporarily installed near the West End of the Cathedral to enable this exciting, one off concert which will also include the Cathedral's 100 year old Harrison and Harrison organ at the East end. The whole building will be filled with the sound of organ music.

Both highly accomplished organists, Paul Trepte, Director of Music at Ely, and Jonathan Lilley the Assistant Organist, will "commence battle" at 7.30pm. Paul Trepte is delighted at the prospect - "Having both organs in situ at the same time presented us with an opportunity not to be missed - it will be exhilarating to hear the sound of two such fine instruments in dialogue with each other. We will be drawing on very popular organ music repertoire - chosen to reveal the full might and musicality of both organs".

All tickets are £5 and are on sale from the Cathedral box office on (01353) 660349 and online.

Both organs will also be used liturgically for a full performance of Widor's Mass for two choirs and organs at the 10.30am Sung Eucharist on Sunday, 15 November.

The full programme for the concert on 14 November is as follows:
Toccata and Fugue in D minor Bach
Sonata in F major C.P.E. Bach
Hungarian March Berlioz
Dialogue sur les mixtures Langlais
Allegro (Symphonie 1) Widor
