ROWAN WILLIAMS, AND SIMON WOLFSON CEO OF NEXT PLC, TO SPEAK AT CELEBRATION OF BUSINESS 2014

28 April 2014

Ely Cathedral Business Group has announced that Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury and Simon Wolfson CEO of Next Plc will be the keynote speakers at the Celebration of Business Reception on Wednesday 21 May.

Rowan Williams, now Master of Magdalene College Cambridge, will speak to the title "What is wealth for?" and Simon Wolfson, CEO of Next Plc, will give a talk on "Wealth - creation, destruction or stagnation. A choice". The Reception starts at 6pm after a business networking session from 3pm. The event will conclude with a Q&A session and audience discussion. Previous ECBG events have included keynote addresses from Sir Charlie Mayfield from John Lewis, The Bishop of Ely, and ResPublica think-tank director Phillip Blond.

This will be the 3rd annual CELEBRATION OF BUSINESS to be held in Ely Cathedral which takes place from Friday 16 May to Wednesday 21 May. The event is centred around a thriving exhibition involving over 100 businesses and organisations, reflecting the broad diversity of business activity in the east of England.

ECBG Chairman, local businessman Tom Green explains: "The motivation for ECBG springs from the Group's strong belief in the positive contribution that healthy sustainable business can make to our community, and our desire to celebrate and encourage both. Too often the Church is seen as 'anti-business', and indeed we are right to criticise the greed and recklessness which has led to the financial crisis, however good business is the means by which we create wealth and manage sustainable economic growth in our communities, making it possible, in spite of the inevitable peaks and troughs of the economic cycle, to invest more in welfare and public services including health and education.

It is important that the Church, and especially our Cathedral engages with this subject which is so much at the centre of our lives."

All are welcome to this event, and admission is free. Anyone intending to come is asked to register online at www.elycathedralbusinessgroup.org
