Ely Refugee Resettlement Campaign is staging a light show and concert to raise awareness and funds for its work helping Syrian refugee families. On Saturday 11 March 2017, Ely cathedral will be illuminated with a spectacular light show, whilst a concert of choral music and readings, titled 'Journey to Hope', will take place at St Mary's Church nearby.

In what promises to be a wonderful event, unlike anything seen before in Ely, the cathedral will be lit up with colours and images, from 6.30pm - 10pm and it is hoped that many people will come to witness the spectacle, have a hot drink and make a donation to the charity. Posters, on the theme of 'Home' and 'Refuge', designed by local children as part of a competition, will be featured as part of the light show, at around 6.45pm.

The concert, 'Journey to Hope', will take place at 7pm at St Mary's Church, and will feature the William Singers, a local chamber choir, singing beautiful, contemplative music, interspersed with readings, which will reflect refugees' journeys from danger to safety. Instead of tickets, donations to Ely Refugee Resettlement Campaign will be requested, with a minimum suggested donation of £10 (but the group wishes to be as inclusive as possible, so will not turn away supporters).

Speaking about the events, a spokesperson for Ely RRC said: "We are excited to hold the campaign's first major fundraising events, and hope that people from Ely and the surrounding area will enjoy the spectacle of the illuminations, and the beauty of the music and readings at the concert.

"As a result of our efforts, a Syrian family has recently moved to the area and is being supported by professionals, organised by Cambridge City Council, to settle in and rebuild their lives in East Cambridgeshire. We need to raise funds to continue to help this family, and, we hope, other families in their journeys to hope."

Notes to Editors

Ely Refugee Resettlement Campaign is raising funds and collecting pledges of help, to support the resettlement of some refugee families in this area, as part of the Government's scheme to resettle 20,000 Syrian refugees in the UK in the next five years (the Syrian Vulnerable Person's Resettlement Scheme).

The Campaign's efforts have led to the resettlement of a Syrian family in East Cambridgeshire in early 2017. The group is supported by many individuals and organisations in the region, and further details of its work can be found on its website: http://bit.ly/21ghmqb.
