A Message from the Acting Dean of Ely...
"One of the characteristics of a human being is our need to have a sense of'who we are'. This is rooted in our family and cultural
heritage and, importantly, in our spiritual heritage as well.
Cathedrals act as a signpost, often visible for miles around. They are also an historical signpost pointing back to our
spiritual heritage.
Ely is such a Cathedral. One of the fascinating things about the Cathedral is that it is not just the glorious architecture that
has survived but also its worship, of which the music is one of the chief ingredients.
The building and music are designed for each other. It is this relationship that has made both so enduring. We have a splendid and
rich choral heritage, cherished and handed down over the years. Our present choir, under the direction of Paul Trepte, has gone from
strength to strength as their recent recordings and tours have shown.
We are now planning to secure and develop our music in exciting ways so that we can pass on the heritage that we have received to
future generations.
Ely Cathedral does not have large endowments or property to support its work, but relies on income from congregation and visitors.
We need extra support to maintain the excellence of the Cathedral's music programme. The Campaign that we have launched is to secure
the future of the Choir and, as funds become available, to develop and share more widely the Cathedral's musical resources and expertise.
It is encouraging to see the support that we have already received. This has been in the form of financial gifts and warm endorsement
by our patrons".
