ELGAR: THE DREAM OF GERONTIUS

12 November 2016 8pm

Join us as the choirs of Jesus, Clare, Gonville & Caius and Selwyn Colleges, together with Ely Cathedral and St Catharine's College Girls' Choirs, the Choristers of Jesus College, and Cambridge University Chamber Choir, perform one of Edward Elgar's best loved and most profound works, The Dream of Gerontius.

The soaring spaces of Ely Cathedral provide an especially fitting backdrop to the dramatic telling of the journey of a man's soul after death. The many highlights include the joyful invocation at the end of Part 1 to 'go forth' - Proficiscere, anima Christiana - and the final great chorus 'Praise to the Holiest'.

'This is the best of me', wrote Elgar at the end of his choral masterpiece. It tells of Gerontius, the Everyman, and his heartfelt expression of loss and hope in the face of death. This universal theme as expressed through Elgar's sublime and dramatic music make any performance of this work a deeply moving experience.

This performance also showcases, for the first time at Ely Cathedral, acclaimed tenor Allan Clayton (pictured) 'If you haven't heard this British tenor, make sure it is the next thing you do' The Times has said and one of the world's most celebrated and pioneering ensembles, the Britten Sinfonia.
